25. Oklahoma vs. Texas

  • Date: Oct. 14
  • Outcome: OU wins 29-24

Facing the Sooners was tough for every Big 12 team in 2017. But, the Texas Longhorns seemingly gave OU everything they could handle. True freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger brought that extra “it factor” to the Horns this year, and that helped in the Red River Shootout.

Mayfield led a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter that was one of many clutch moments during his Heisman campaign. OU tight end Mark Andrews, who declared for the NFL Draft following the end of the season, caught the game-winning touchdown.

The blown lead for the Sooners made this one interesting. This Mayfield-led team held a 20-0 lead, at one point, only to see the Horns storm back. Moreover, UT did have the chance to win the game late in the fourth quarter.

We do not think of the Sooners as a defensively strong team. But, it was the OU defense that shut down Ehlinger on the final drive for the Horns. Momentum was nearly all on UT’s side too. This was one of the better moments for the OU defense in 2017.
