There are many reasons that a 10-day contract for a borderline NBA player might fall through, but this is right up there with the most unusual.
Jamil Wilson has spent time with both the Los Angeles Clippers and the Agua Caliente Clippers of the G League this season, even getting some starts in December when the big Clippers were without Blake Griffin. He got waived on Jan. 5, but it appeared the other NBA tenant of the Staples Center was going to give him a chance to ball at the highest level.
But the Los Angeles Lakers have decided against signing Wilson to a 10-day contract, and the reason why is a strange one. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports that Wilson has been accused of knowingly giving a woman an STD, having unprotected sex with her while knowing he was infected.
More details provided by TMZ Sports state that the unidentified woman is suing Wilson for sexual battery and fraud, claiming that she contracted herpes from him. The TMZ article says that the woman’s “consent was based on the assumption he was disease-free,” and that she is looking for damages for emotional distress.
Through his agent, Wilson denied the allegations to ESPN:
"“Jamil has been irreparably harmed by the recent accusation, which has now resulted in damage to his NBA career. We will not tolerate these false accusations, but will pursue all legal remedies with the full force of the law.”"
The 27-year-old Wilson is the definition of a modern pro basketball journeyman, playing for multiple D-League teams after going undrafted following a college career that involved stops at Oregon and Marquette. Wilson also played briefly in Puerto Rico and Italy before resurfacing with the Clippers this season.
