The Bundesliga season resumes following the winter break, with Bayer Leverkusen hosting Bayern Munich at the BayArena on Friday, Jan. 12. Bayern are comfortable atop the table, 11 points clear of second-place Schalke and 13 points ahead of fourth-place Bayer Leverkusen.
Munich closed out the first half of the season with four straight wins and three consecutive clean sheets. After struggling last season when Manuel Neuer went down with a foot injury, Sven Ulreich has played significantly better this season, making key saves in Bayern’s run of 1-0 wins. Bayern have allowed 11 goals, the fewest goals in the Bundesliga, seven goals fewer than the next best club Frankfurt. Robert Lewandowski is having another excellent season in Munich, scoring 15 goals in 17 games. With Arjen Robben expected to return from injury, Bayern’s attack could be even more dominant. Arturo Vidal is second on Bayern with five goals but speculation over the winter break had the Chilean midfielder making a potential move to Chelsea, reuniting him with Antonio Conte. However, Jupp Heynckes came out and told the media that Bayern would not be selling any players during the transfer window.
Leverkusen picked up points in 12 straight games, helping the club move from 14th in the table to fourth. Over their last 12 games, Leverkusen picked up 24 points to move into a battle for a spot in Europe. Bayer have scored the third most goals in the Bundesliga, behind only Borussia Dortmund and Bayern. Kevin Volland leads the club with nine goals and needs a strong second half of the season to secure his position on the German roster for the World Cup. Jamaican winger Leon Bailey has been one of the most exciting young players in Germany. The 20-year-old has scored six goals and assisted on four others.
