The first half of the La Liga season wraps up this weekend with Real Madrid hosting Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday. Real Madrid are fourth in the table with 32 points but are 16 points behind Barcelona. Villarreal are sixth in La Liga, four points behind Real Madrid.
Real Madrid have struggled this season to find consistency under manager Zinédine Zidane who is starting to feel the pressure. In their last La Liga game, Madrid drew 2-2 with Celta de Vigo. Madrid have scored 32 goals this season, the third most in the league. However, Madrid’s biggest stars have failed to deliver. Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale have combined for only eight goals. Karim Benzema will miss Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury but has also failed to find the back of the net regularly this year. Sergio Ramos is also expected to miss Saturday’s game with a calf injury.
Villarreal have had an up and down stretch over their past six games. Over their last three games, The Yellow Submarine picked up seven points and snapped a three-game losing streak. Villarreal have scored the eighth most goals and allowed the eighth fewest goals in La Liga. Congolese striker Cédric Bakambu leads the club with nine goals. With Madrid struggling, Villarreal are catching them at the right time and could steal points away from home.
