Watching Nick Foles makes me miss Carson Wentz so much it hurts

Watching Nick Foles play in the NFL Playoffs for the Philadelphia Eagles makes me miss Carson Wentz so dang much it hurts.

I really miss Carson Wentz.

The Eagles second-year quarterback was well on his way toward winning the NFL MVP before a torn ACL ended his season prematurely. The Eagles were the best offense in the NFL with Wentz looking like the second coming of John Elway in the process. But then the knee injury happened and he had to give way to Nick Foles to take his place in the lineup.

Foles had success for one year under former Eagles coach Chip Kelly when he threw 27 touchdowns to only two interceptions. That stat line may be one of the biggest flukes in NFL history, because he hasn’t shown to be anything close to that type of player in his opportunities since.

With Wentz out and Foles in, many discounted the Eagles in their game against the Falcons tonight, including the oddsmakers who make the Eagles the underdog against the No. 6 seed. It’s an unprecedented thing but it’s because no one has confidence in Foles.

And after watching the first half against the Falcons that began with Foles throwing a pass woefully short and his best pass of the game being one that should have resulted in an interception, it’s easy to see why.

In the play below, Foles should have been picked off by Keanu Neal who, for some reason, left his feet when he didn’t need to, and hit the ball with his knee, and the big deflection went into the waiting hands of Eagles receiver Torrey Smith.

That ladies and gentleman was Foles’ longest completion of the day, on what should have been an easy turnover. It’s been that kind of game so far for Foles. And it’s a shame because he should be holding a clipboard on the sideline and watching Wentz dissect the Falcons defense like he did opposing defenses all year.

Thankfully, for Eagles fans, the defense has kept them in the game, and Foles hasn’t tanked the game like he’s T.J. Yates or Nathan Peterman, but he’s not inspiring much confidence and he can’t fill the shoes of Wentz.

It’s really not fair, but it’s the reality of the situation he’s facing. He can’t be Wentz, but he also can’t be Nick Foles if the Eagles hope to fly into next weekend.
