As the Bundesliga season returns from its month-long winter break, Borussia Dortmund are third in the table after an up and down first half of the season. On Sunday, Dortmund host Wolfsburg at the Westfalenstadion.
After firing manager Peter Bosz, Dortmund won their first two games under Peter Stoger. While Dortmund are first in the Bundesliga with 39 goals, they’re middle of the league defensively, allowing 24 goals. All 24 goals were allowed in Dortmund’s final 12 games of the first half of the season. Dortmund’s defensive struggles can be tied to injuries and Bosz’s inability to make adjustments. Stoger’s appointment has helped stabilize the club at the back. Wolfsburg have 19 points in their first 17 games but are only four points clear of the relegation zone. While Wolfsburg barely survived relegation last season, they appear to be safe in the middle of the table. After appearing in only seven games in the first half of the season, American John Anthony Brooks is ready to return to the lineup and should help Martin Schmidt’s team defensively. Mario Gomez was sold to Stuttgart as the transfer window opener. Gomez had scored only one goal for the Wolves after leading the club with 16 goals last season. Liverpool loanee Divock Origi will assume a bigger role with Gomez leaving the club. Origi has scored four goals this season. Daniel Didavi and Yunus Malli had a strong start to the season, combining for nine goals and seven assists.
