Premier League winners and losers: Harry Kane sets more records
By Ty Finch
Loser: Arsenal
For Arsenal supporters, Sunday’s loss to Bournemouth, who have won once in their previous 11 matches, was just another blip on the radar. It’s become expected at this point. Playing without Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, the Gunners looked listless and lacking any imagination going forward. If the rumors of both of their stars going elsewhere in January or the summer are true, especially if the team doesn’t get any money out of their transfers, Arsenal may look more like a mid-table side than a Champions League contender.
Arsenal are in a no-win situation the rest of this season. Sanchez is all but gone, as both Manchester clubs have maintained interest in the Chilean in January, and Ozil is creeping towards an exit as well. It’s hard to blame them either. The Gunners are fighting to stay relevant with the top teams in the Premier League and can barely keep their head above the swaths of mid-table clubs. Without them, they would struggle for a Europa League spot. Why should they stay?
The last few years of Arsenal have been a big shrug of the shoulders. It’s clear to everyone except the owners that a change in managers needs to happen, but their stubborn refusal is keeping them floating in the middle of the ocean. What’s even more disheartening for supporters is that Wenger has another year on his contract, and it’s frighteningly obvious that the board has no intentions of cutting that off early. Arsenal have another year of desperately fighting for a top six spot to look forward to, without two of their most exciting stars.
