Twitter accidentally punked the world into thinking Betty White was dead when all she wanted to do was celebrate her birthday.

It’s a tradition unlike any other. No, it’s not The Masters rather it’s the annual tradition of seeing that Betty White is trending on Twitter because of her birthday and immediately assuming that she’s dead.

White turned 96-years old on Wednesday and Twitter celebrated her by making the actress a top trending topic. Of course, people assumed that if White was trending early in the morning it must mean that she had died overnight. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time that we’ve woken up to terrible news and it’s not like celebrity deaths don’t shoot to the top of Twitter trending.

Thankfully, White is immortal and will never die. Whether or not the immortality is because she consumed the souls of her Golden Girls co-stars is yet to be seen; immortality is a messy business and we’re not ones to judge.

Basically, everyone in the world had the same reaction when they saw WHite was trending and there was a universal sigh of relief when we found out why.

Also, this is absolutely the “Year of the Denzel Washington GIF”. How many times have we seen this used:

We haven’t reached peak Denzel GIF yet, but we’re only halfway through the first month of the year. Just give it some time. Anyways, one person on Twitter had the right idea for next year when White turns 97: how about including #happybirthday in the trending hashtag rather than just her name.

This is an easy fix. Everyone’s blood pressure thanks you in advance.

In a world where we don’t have many happy things left, the constant seems to be Betty White. Aside from the morbid assumption that she had died, let’s take a moment to consider that she’s been alive for almost a century. Not only have all 96-years of her life been a joy but the good that she’s given back to the world — both humorous and philanthropic — should be goals for all of us in life.
