Manchester City beat Newcastle 3-1 at the Etihad on Saturday, putting in another thrilling attacking performance to get back on track after losing their first league game of the season against Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.
City dominated possession as expected, pegging Newcastle back deep in their own half. They thought they had the opener in the 18th minute, when Raheem Sterling finished David Silva’s delightful cross at the back post, but Sterling was flagged for offside.
The pressure continued to mount, however, and the Citizens moved up a gear after the half-hour mark. After forcing Karl Darlow into two saves in as many minutes, the home side finally made the breakthrough in the 34th minute.
Kevin De Bruyne, as he has been so often this season, was the creator, curling in an enticing cross from the left wing that Sergio Aguero, with the faintest of faint touches, directed past Darlow into the bottom corner.
The second half seemed like it would be uneventful as City, comfortable with their lead, passed their visitors into submission. When Aguero made it two from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute after Javier Manquillo fouled Sterling, it felt like game over.
But Newcastle found a route back into the game shortly after. Ciaran Clarke found Jacob Murphy with a lovely through ball and Murphy beat Ederson with a deft chip to get the Magpies back within a goal.
Newcastle enjoyed their best spell of the match following the goal, and forced City onto the back foot for the first time all game. When Ederson spilled a catch, which Mo Diame couldn’t quite turn in, it seemed the game was headed for a dramatic finish.
But City put the result to bed with his hat-trick goal in the 83rd minute, tapping in from inside the box after a wonderful run by Leroy Sane down the left.
