Bill Belichick only has eyes for the Lombardi Trophy and will accept no other substitutes.
For the eighth time during his watch, Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl. A comeback against the Blake Bortles-led Jaguars was needed to make it happen, but the Patriots are poised to collect another ring in improbable fashion.
There’s no better picture of winning than the Patriots, and Belichick is the grizzled brains of the operation. He settles for nothing less than the best, which is why no one should be surprised that he passed off the Lamar Hunt Trophy like it was cheap dinnerware.
After the Patriots clinched their latest Super Bowl berth, Robert Kraft handed his head coach the trophy for winning the conference. Belichick’s utter disdain for the trophy perfectly fits his legendary troll lore.
That’s incredible, but also totally expected.
Belichick has made a career out of being the guy who takes no days off. He’s never pleased, even when he’s collecting rings in what will be remembered as one of the best dynasties in sports history.
Beating the Jaguars was one of the bigger tests that Belichick has had to face during this incredible coaching run. Doug Marrone out-coached him for most of the game, living up to the endorsement that Belichick gave last offseason that landed the Jaguars coach his job.
There’s such a thing as top dog, however, and Belichick is that guy. And something that guy doesn’t settle for is anything less than the top prize.
