Serie A resumes from its winter break with AC Milan traveling to Cagliari on Sunday in a game the Rossoneri are hoping to win as the club flirt dangerously close to the relegation zone while a spot in Europe gets further out of reach with each passing week.

AC Milan are stuck in the middle of the table, in 11th place tied at 28 points with the trio of Udinese, Fiorentina and Torino. A win would certainly help the struggling Rossoneri in what can only be defined as a disastrous season. While coach Gennaro Gattuso has tried to turn things around after the sacking of Vincenzo Montella a few months ago, the once-storied club find themselves in no better shape than they were under their previous manager.

There were high hopes for AC Milan coming into this season. The club, under the ownership of a consortium of Chinese investors, sent the transfer market ablaze this past summer, signing 12 new players. Nonetheless, the team never gelled and have only managed to compile an 8-4-8 record in 20 games. AC Milan are as close to the relegation zone as they are to the top four. That’s a sobering statistic for a club that were winning league titles and conquering the Champions League not so long ago.

AC Milan’s owners have said they’re not interested in buying or selling players during this month’s transfer window. Instead, they are looking at “consolidation” of their current roster. In a post featured on the club’s official website, AC Milan said that “aside from all the players we’ve been linked with, Milan’s winter transfer campaign only involves the consolidation of all the players that moved to Milanello after all the business we did last summer. The club remain convinced of their choices and continue to work with them.”

Some of the players the team purchased over the summer (like midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu and striker Andre Silva) could be sold off come the end of the season. It’s time for both these players to show they are worth the money AC Milan paid for them and the upcoming match against Cagliari would be a good place to start. The team are led offensively by forward Suso, who has five league goals this season in 17 games. He is also a player rumored to be going at the end of the season after reportedly drawing interest from Liverpool.

The off-field distractions don’t end there. There have also been accusations, published by the Turin-based daily newspaper La Stampa over the past week, of allegations that former club owner Silvio Berlusconi’s group and the team’s new owners were involved in a money laundering scheme when they sold the team last year for $908 million. In a statement, the team’s new owners said Tuesday that his purchase of the club from Berlusconi was conducted legally. Berlusconi’s holding company, Fininvest, which sold the club, has declined comment.

“All procedures were observed with total respect for the applicable laws and practices,” the club’s president Li Yonghong said in a statement.

Cagliari, meanwhile, are also in desperate need of a victory, but for starkly different reasons. Currently in 16th place, the Sardinians are just five points clear of the relegation zone. They were expected to finish anywhere from mid-table to near the bottom from the start of the season. In any event, a series of slip ups this winter and the team could very well find themselves in the bottom three spots come spring.

Hurting matters further will be that Cagliari will be without their top scorer, Brazilian attacking midfielder Joao Pedro, who has six goals in all competitions this season. He is still sidelined due to a four-match ban, which ends on Jan. 29, for stomping on another player’s foot in the match versus Fiorentina.
