Giants reportedly looking at Jack Del Rio

Only weeks after being let go by the Oakland Raiders as their head coach, Jack Del Rio may have found his next job running the New York Giants defense.

Unbeknownst to him, Jack Del Rio was a lame-duck coach when his team played the Los Angeles Chargers in their regular season finale. Del Rio would be fired immediately after his team fell to the Chargers 30-10, which finished up a 6-10 season for the Silver and Black. In the blink of an eye, Del Rio was out in Oakland, and Jon Gruden was in, ending his three-year run as the man in charge of the Raiders.

Across the country, the New York Giants were finishing up a terrible season of their own. At 3-13, New York had already fired both head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese, clearing the way for a new regime. While the head coach spot has yet to be taken care of, there has been some rumblings about coordinators, and Del Rio’s name is starting to emerge as a favorite to handle the defense.

With the Giants reportedly set to name Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur its next  head coach, Del Rio would be a solid hiring on the defensive side of the ball. He is one of the best defensive minds in the NFL, and has some solid talent on the roster to play with if he gets the job. As a head coach, Del Rio has not been as successful as he has been as a coordinator, and he just may be one of those guys who is better at handling only half of the gameplan.

The Giants have a lot of work to do, but they are building a solid group to lead the organization moving forward. New general manager Dave Gettleman built up playoff-caliber teams during his time with the Carolina Panthers, and the organization does have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. It could be a quick turnaround from their 3-13 2017 season, and with talent on both sides of the ball, the Giants could go from picking in the top three one year, to the playoffs the next.
