Vikings to consider Ben McAdoo, Mike McCoy as offensive coordinator
Pat Shurmur is in line to move on, so the Minnesota Vikings are looking at a couple former head coaches to be their new offensive coordinator.
Whenever the season ends for the Minnesota Vikings, all indications are Pat Shurmur will become the new New York Giants head coach. That will leave a search to find a new offensive coordinator, and according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media they will consider Ben McAdoo and Mike McCoy for the job.
McAdoo was fired as Giants’ head coach with four games to go in the regular season, and he was 13-15 over less than two seasons. But he has experience as an offensive coordinator, serving in that job for the Giants for two seasons prior to replacing Tom Coughlin as head coach. McAdoo was also linked to the coordinator opening with the Green Bay Packers, where he was tight ends coach and quarterbacks coach from 2006-2013, and he interviewed for the offensive coordinator opening with the Cleveland Browns.
McCoy is also a former head coach in the league, with a 27-37 record and one playoff appearance over four seasons (2013-2016) with the San Diego Chargers. He was offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos this year, before being fired midseason in the midst of the team’s losing streak.
Mike Zimmer, with his defensive acumen in mind, has favored former head coaches as his offensive coordinator. Norv Turner had the job for two-plus seasons, before he resigned and Shurmur was promoted from tight ends coach to interim offensive coordinator in the middle of the 2016 campaign.

Shurmur had the interim tag removed this year, and coordinated a top-10 scoring offense mostly with Case Keenum under center. It’s easy to see other former head coaches being on top of the list to replace Shurmur, and McAdoo and McCoy fit that bill.
