13. George Hill, Sacramento Kings
The Sacramento Kings and George Hill each may be having buyerās remorse.
Hill, who signed a three-year, $57 million contract with Sacramento in July, told Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee in early January, āIāve never been through anything like this, not ever. Itās not what I expected, a little more difficult than I anticipated.ā He didnāt specify what in particular was gnawing at him ā whether itās the Kingsā struggle as a team or his constantly shifting role ā but he clearly wishes he could have a do-over on his free agency.
The Kings also canāt be thrilled about their underwhelming returns from their $19 million-per-year investment, particularly considering how well fellow veteran free agents Zach Randolph and Vince Carter have fared in their new roles. Once Sacramento officially slips out of playoff contention, player development should become the franchiseās top priority, which likely means more playing time for rookie point guard DeāAaron Fox and less for Hill.
The Kings may value Hillās veteran presence in the locker room for Fox and fellow rookie guard Frank Mason, as he can at least teach them the ins and outs of NBA life even as he scuffles in terms of his on-court production. But if both sides decide theyād like a mulligan on this past July, donāt be surprised if Sacramento attempts to dangle its prized free-agent acquisition over the coming weeks.
