NBA Trade Deadline 2018: The 20 best players available
18. Greg Monroe, Phoenix Suns
If Jahlil Okafor merited a #FreeJah hashtag on Twitter when he was racking up DNPs left and right during his time with the Philadelphia 76ers, how has #FreeMoose not started to trend for Greg Monroe?
Since the Milwaukee Bucks sent Monroe to the Phoenix Suns for Eric Bledsoe in early November, the big man has mostly been relegated to a spectator role. He makes the occasional appearance whenever Tyson Chandler receives a veteranâs night off or if Alex Len is banged up, but interim head coach Jay Triano otherwise keeps him chained to the bench most nights.
With Monroe set to become an unrestricted free agent in July, itâs fair if the Suns donât envision him in their long-term plans. Assuming thatâs the case â and their actions to date do nothing to indicate otherwise â theyâd be wise to dangle his $17.9 million expiring contract as trade bait to suitors in need of salary relief.
Phoenix is in the beginning stages of a rebuild, so cap space shouldnât matter all that much for the next few seasons. Flipping Monroe for a bad contract makes sense if another team is willing to package draft considerations and/or young, out-of-favor prospects, as the Suns remain firmly in talent-acquisition mode until Devin Booker and Co. get more NBA seasoning.
