New Giants coach Pat Shurmur will make fans forget about Ben McAdoo era

The New York Giants made official what had long been expected for a couple of weeks and named Pat Shurmur the team’s new head coach.

Pat Shurmur is officially is the new head coach of the New York Giants. Shurmur was signed to a five-year deal to succeed Ben McAdoo who was fired with four games left in a 3-13 season that was marked by a season-ending injury to Odell Beckham and McAdoo benching Eli Manning in a move that blew up in his face and cost him his job.

The move was announced on Monday, one day after the Minnesota Vikings were eliminated from the playoffs. Shurmur was the Vikings offensive coordinator and helped develop Case Keenum from journeyman quarterback to one win away from playing in the Super Bowl. Shurmur previously served as an offensive coordinator for the Rams and Eagles but what stands out most on his resume is his two-year stint with the Cleveland Browns.

Shurmur went 9-23 in two years in Cleveland, which normally wouldn’t be anything to write home about, but considering it’s the Browns, who have won two games in the last two years, nine wins over two years is hugely successful.

Now, he’ll be tasked with rebuilding the Giants along with new general manager Dave Gettelman and quarterback will be at the top of his to-do list. It sounds like the Giants are committed to Manning for at least one more year but will be in a position to draft the quarterback of the future with the No. 2 pick in April’s NFL Draft.

Due to Shurmur’s track record developing quarterbacks like Keenum, Nick Foles and Sam Bradford, it’s likely the Giants will add a young quarterback at some point in the draft for Shurmur to mold. The other big decision on his plate and much more pressing is who his defensive coordinator will be and former Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio is a top candidate, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

That would be a pretty nice hire as the Giants continue to rid the stench of the McAdoo era from the franchise. It won’t be fixed overnight, but as the Rams and Jaguars have shown this year, teams can make a quick 180 in an offseason or two all depending on getting the right coach.

The Giants should feel great with Shurmur on board who should be successful in getting the G-Men back to the playoffs in short order.
