NBA Trade Deadline 2018: One trade every team should make
By Daniel Lewis
Miami Heat
Send: Justise Winslow
Receive: Emmanuel Mudiay, 2018 second round pick
The Heat were lucky to get Winslow in the draft, but he hasn’t developed into the player they thought they were getting when they selected him in 2015. They’ve traded their 2018 pick to Phoenix as part of the Goran Dragic deal, and they own one second round pick from now until 2023. This deal allows them to add another ballhandler to their team, helping protect them in the case that Dragic and Tyler Johnson are out with injuries. With all the athletic 3-and0D wings they have, they still need a player to help set up their offense and get the ball to those wings and bigs so they can score.
Taking a chance on Mudiay while passing on Winslow is taking a chance on a project you don’t know while abandoning the project you do know. Both players likely would benefit from a change in scenery, and they fill needs for both teams. Perhaps Erik Spoelstra can unlock what Michael Malone could not.
