Shoes to Fill: Christian Kirk

Christian Kirk was an impact player from Day 1 at Texas A&M for head coach Kevin Sumlin. Kirk caught 234 passes for 2,856 yards and 26 touchdowns in his three seasons with the Aggies, and also scored six times on punt returns and once on a kick return. The production and playmaking ability Kirk brought to Texas A&M will be very difficult to replace, but new head coach Jimbo Fisher has a few talented options to choose from.

First on the list is rising sophomore Jhamon Ausbon. Ausbon, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound receiver from IMG Academy in Florida, signed with A&M as a four-star recruit in the 2017 class ranked the No. 10 receiver prospect in the country and 73rd overall on the 247Sports Composite. Aided by a receiving corps depleted by graduation after the 2016 season, Ausbon took advantage of an opportunity for early playing time as a true freshman and saw action in all 13 games, starting slow and finishing as one of the top targets in the Aggies’ passing attack.

Ausbon finished his freshman season with 50 catches, which ranked second only to Kirk last season. He tallied 571 receiving yards, which ranked third on the team and caught three touchdown passes. The Houston native had at least one catch in 12 games, and had multiple catches in 11 contests, including each of his first six. He surpassed 100 receiving yards twice; first with 105 yards and a touchdown on seven catches against New Mexico, and second with a season-high 12-catch, 112-yard performance that included a 13-yard score against Wake Forest in the Belk Bowl.
