Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley will miss the rest of the season as he undergoes surgery on a heel injury.

In an email to season ticket holders, Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace announced Saturday that Mike Conley won’t return to the court this season as he undergoes surgery on a heel injury that has limited him to only 12 games so far this season.

While Memphis will certainly miss Conley on the court, the news might be positive in the long run. The Grizzlies have been awful so far this season. They were expected to challenge for a playoff spot in the West but are currently in 12th place with a record of 17-31.

As good as Conley is, rushing him back from a serious injury at this stage of the season would almost certainly not have been enough to give the Grizzlies a serious shot at the playoffs in such a deep conference. He now gets the chance to make a full recovery.

As Wallace said in his email to season ticket holders, “Mike has been extremely diligent as we pursued multiple different approaches to alleviate the pain before deciding surgery was the best solution.”
