After 20 games, Barcelona are running away with La Liga. Ernesto Valverde’s side have not lost this season and are 11 points ahead of second place Atletico Madrid and 19 points ahead of Real Madrid. On Sunday, Barcelona host Alaves at Camp Nou. Alaves are 16th in the table but are only three points clear of the relegation zone.
Valverde’s team have won six straight games, conceding only two goals over that stretch. Barcelona have scored a La Liga best 57 goals while allowing the fewest goals this season. In their last game, Barcelona defeated Real Betis 5-0 behind braces from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. Messi and Suarez have combined to score 34 of the club’s 57 goals this season. If preventing Barcelona wasn’t hard enough, former Liverpool player Philippe Coutinho is expected to make his debut for the club after his transfer to the club earlier this month.
Abelardo was appointed the manager of Alaves on Dec. 1 after the club started the season with 11 losses in their first 13 games. Under Abelardo, Alaves have played significantly better, winning four of their first seven games and picking up 13 points. However, Alaves have struggled to score goals this season. Last place Malaga are the only club to score fewer goals than Alaves. Barcelona loanee Munir El Haddadi and Ibai Gómez are tied for the team lead with four goals apiece.
