Or as Devonte Graham phrased it in the post-game press conference, the Jayhawks are going crazy.

The Kansas Jayhawks have done a lot of things this season, but the one thing they haven’t done in conference play is outrebound their opponent. Until Monday.

Kansas leads the Big 12 by a game and a half, and look to be on their way to a record 13th straight conference title. This was supposed to be the year that someone dethroned the Jayhawks as conference champions, but after they pulled a rabbit out of the hat at West Virginia a couple weeks ago, they seemed to put all of that talk to bed.

The Jayhawks have one of the most prolific offenses in college basketball. They’re ranked 26 in the country in scoring and they’re tied for 12 in assists per game. They live and die by the three ball, and they’re pretty good at knocking those down as well. Only three power conference teams shoot the long ball better than them.

However, the one thing the Jayhawks do not do well is rebound: They’re ranked 126 in the country in rebounding. They haven’t outrebounded a single Big 12 opponent, and haven’t outrebounded any opponent since they played Nebraska-Omaha back on Dec. 18. That is until Monday in Manhattan.

The Jayhawks beat Kansas State 70-56 on Monday and outrebounded them in the process 41-31. Their seniors Svi Mykhailiuk and Devonte’ Graham were shocked and pretty happy they finally outrebounded someone.

Kansas is a small group that generally plays with only one big man on the floor at a time. So that obviously limits their rebounding ability, and forces them to work a little extra harder on the glass. The Wildcats only shot 32 percent from the floor so that makes for a lot of rebounding opportunities, and the Jayhawks made the most of it.

In hindsight, it really doesn’t matter if the Jayhawks never outrebound another opponent from now until the end of the season. As long as they don’t get brutalized on the offensive glass they’ll be fine because their offense is so good. Don’t expect Kansas outrebounded their opponent to become a reoccurring theme, but I’m sure Kansas fans wouldn’t mind if it did.
