After 24 games, Burnley surprisingly are eighth in the Premier League, after a very strong first half of the season. On Wednesday, Newcastle host the Clarets at St.James’ Park. The Magpies are 15th, with 23 points in their first 24 games.
Newcastle picked up eight points in their last six games to help pull the Magpies out of the relegation zone. However, Newcastle have lost 10 of their last 14 games, the Magpies are far from safety. Rafa Benitez’s squad have been average defensively, allowing 34 but have struggled to score this season. Newcastle’s 22 goals are the sixth fewest in the Premier League. Joselu leads the team with four goals in his first season with the club.
Burnley have not won a game since Dec. 12, when they defeated Stoke 1-0. The Clarets were as high as sixth in the table at one point but have fallen back after losing four of their last six games, picking up only two points. The Clarets have allowed the fourth fewest goals this season but their inability to score has cost them points over the past month. Only Brighton and Swansea have scored fewer goals than the Clarets this season. Chris Wood leads the club with four goals but the New Zealand international has not scored since Nov. 29. Wood has missed the last five games with a hamstring injury.
