2018 NFL mock draft: Baker Mayfield heads to Jets
By Brad Weiss
The Washington Redskins failed to make the playoffs this past season, and there are plenty of question marks heading into 2018. The biggest question mark is who is going to play quarterback, as the organization has yet to make a long-term commitment to Kirk Cousins. Cousins has been more than productive during his time with the Redskins, and it is a bit puzzling as to why they have yet to lock him up long term.
If Cousins does come back, there is no need for the team to trade up and get a quarterback. That would put the emphasis on getting better on defense with their first round pick, specifically in the secondary. In college football, there were few more versatile than Florida State’s Derwin James, who should hear his name called in the first round in April.
James was not only one of the better safeties in the FBS last season, but he also showed he could play cornerback as well. In addition, he leaves Florida State as the all-time leader in return yards, so the Redskins would be a getting a solid piece of the puzzle if they decide to take him in the first round. He did suffer a terrible injury in 2016, but he bounced back in a big way last season, even if the Seminoles were one of the more surprisingly bad teams in college football.
