Peter Cech

In spite a number of decent performances this season, we’ve seen Peter Cech wither before our eyes over the course of the last few seasons. Hard to believe that this is the same man who was unanimously considered the best keeper in the world not too long ago.

The latest in a long line of blunders by the Arsenal keeper is the blooper against Swansea. Cech received a backpass with enough time to put the ball out of danger. Instead, the worst possible outcomes ensued as he mishit the ball straight to Jordan Ayew, passed it into the net.

Sure, you can question the intelligence of a back pass to your keeper from inside your own box with a slew of opposing players applying pressure, but Cech should have and could have done much better than that. The fact the Arsenal keeper chose to kick the ball down the middle of the pitch and not toward the sideline is embarrassing for a player of his caliber.

To make matters worse, this was the game-winning goal that sealed Arsenal’s fate against then-bottom place Swansea and has made a Champions League place finish seem like a pipe dream.
