Top 20 quarterback performances in Super Bowl history
By Joe Romano
10. Phil Simms, New York Giants, Super Bowl XXI
Aside from the Cowboys,Packers and 49ers the only other team to have two quarterbacks make the list are the New York Giants. The first of those two is Phil Simms. Before he was calling games Simms was leading his team to a victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI.
The New York Giants of the late 80s were best known for their linebackers Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson. In the 1987 Super Bowl it was Simms who owned the day.
This game was another that featured two of the league’s top signal callers in Simms and Broncos’ John Elway. It was only Elway’s fourth season but he was already making his mark on the league. Meanwhile Simms was thought of as a hindrance to the Giants offense. He finished the regular season throwing more interceptions (22) than touchdowns (21). That all changed in the Super Bowl.
The Giants would reel off 26 unanswered points after a tight first half. Simms would finish with 22-of-25 passes complete for 268 yards and three touchdowns. It was the performance the Giants needed as their normally strong running game was failing them.
Simms would walk away with MVP honors after setting multiple records, including a 150.9 quarterback rating. The Giants would win another Super Bowl two years later ending a bid by the 49ers to win three in a row.
