8. Roger Staubach, Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowl VI
The Dallas Cowboys get their second quarterback on the list with Roger Staubach. The signal caller who led the Cowboys between 1969-79 had an impressive outing in Super Bowl VI. Dallas defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-3
Like most teams during this era, the Cowboys were led by their “Doomsday Defense.” Despite the defenses strong performance it was Staubach who was necessary for the Cowboys to win the big game. This game finally shed the narrative that the Cowboys could not win in crucial games.
Staubach finished the regular season as the league’s top rated quarterback. He posted an impressive for the time, 1,182 yards passing and 15 touchdowns with only four interceptions.
In the actual Super Bowl it was not a close contest as the score would indicate. The Dolphins simply could not get anything going against the Doomsday Defense. Meanwhile the Cowboys offense had little issues moving the ball.
Staubach won the MVP by completing 12-of-19 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. The most impressive part of the performance is that the majority of this Dolphins team was the same team that went undefeated the following season on their way to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys handed the Dolphins their only loss in the year 1972.
