Mike Fisher made the surprise announcement this week that he would be coming out of retirement to return to the Nashville Predators for the remainder of the season.

On Wednesday, Mike Fisher and the Nashville Predators held a press conference to announce Fisher’s return to the team. According to ESPN, Fisher expects to sign a contract for the rest of the season before the Feb. 26 trade deadline.

Mike Fisher, 37, served as Nashville’s team captain during its run to the Stanley Cup finals before retiring in 2017. Nashville is in position this season to make another deep playoff run.

With a strong defensive group on the blue line and depth down the middle of the ice, Nashville will be tough to eliminate. GM David Poile may end up being the winner of the trade deadline without even having to make a trade.

The Predators already have a group of talented centers lead by Ryan Johansen, Kyle Turris and Nick Bonino. Adding in a veteran like Fisher to fill the role of fourth line center would provide even more balance through the lineup.

Colton Sissons becomes the extra center on the team. Sissons is a great option to bring in if someone gets hurt or is struggling. This opportunity is perfect for Fisher to finally get his championship ring.

Fisher’s return helps Nashville when it comes to handling the upcoming trade deadline. Nashville was in the market for a bottom six forward or two. With the return of Fisher, those needs will not be as urgent.

Fisher not only fills a bottom six role but also a leadership role, as he was the former captain of the Predators before handing it over to Roman Josi.

Nashville may still look to add a scoring threat on its wing at the deadline. Names like Evander Kane and Mike Hoffman will be linked to Nashville up to the deadline. Adding another scoring threat will push Nashville over the top.
