24. 1991 Buffalo Bills, Super Bowl XXVI

The 1991 Buffalo Bills responded well after one of the most heartbreaking losses in Super Bowl history the year before by again winning the AFC East with a 13-3 en route to back-to-back AFC Championships.

Buffalo would easily beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional round, and won a low-scoring game against John Elway’s Denver Broncos in the 1990 AFC Championship.

Awaiting the Bills in Super Bowl XXVI were the Washington Redskins, using its third different starting quarterback to win an NFC Championship in the Joe Gibbs era with Canadian Mark Rypien.

In a neutral, indoor site at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, the Redskins were be a seven-point favorite over the Bills in Super Bowl XXVI. After losing Super Bowl XXVI by the slimmest of margins (a single point), the Bills would fall to the Redskins by 13 points, 37-24.

This was the second straight Super Bowl loss for Marv Levy’s Bills and it wouldn’t be the last. The first two of four straight Super Bowl losses by the Bills were probably the two that Buffalo could have won. They should have won in Super Bowl XXV and stood a good chance against the Redskins. However, they had no shot against either of the Jimmy Johnson coached Dallas Cowboys teams they would play in the next two Super Bowls.
