Recent history suggests Tom Brady winning the MVP is bad news for Patriots in Super Bowl

Tom Brady just won his third MVP award on Saturday, but recent history tells us that’s not exactly good news for the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady keeps getting older, but his performance hasn’t seemed to slow down. At age 40 and in his 18th season in the league, Brady led the New England Patriots to a 13-3 record and won his third regular season MVP trophy. He became the oldest player to ever win an MVP and threw for 4,577 yards, 32 touchdowns, posted a 102.8 QBR rating and only threw eight interceptions.

Tom ‘terrific’ is one of the most accomplished football players in history. If he wins his 6th Superbowl on Sunday, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady will have more Super Bowl wins then every franchise in the entire sport besides the Pittsburgh Steelers.

While Brady has defied all odds and expectations to this point in his career, ESPN tweeted a very interesting image about the success, or lack thereof, of recent MVP winners in the Super Bowl. MVP winners are currently riding an eight-game losing streak in the Super Bowl, including Matt Ryan to Brady’s Patriots just last year. You have to go all the way back to 1999 when Kurt Warner led the Greatest Show on Turf St. Louis Rams to the Super Bowl win over the Tennessee Titans to find an MVP that won the Super Bowl.

So there you have it, the Philadelphia Eagles are going to win the Super Bowl because Brady won the MVP and apparently, that’s a very bad thing. Of course, it’s just an odd statistic that MVP winners haven’t enjoyed much recent success in the Super Bowl.

The Patriots have been perennial contenders ever since Brady entered the league and have are almost never considered underdogs. Vegas has the Patriots at -4.5 over the Eagles for Super Bowl LII. Tom Brady has history against his side, but that has never stopped him before.
