Where are the 2018 Winter Olympics?

Where are the 2018 Winter Olympics being hosted? What venues are hosting the events?

It’s Olympics time, and this year the Winter Games are being hosted in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Pyeongchang is not that capital, love that’s Seoul. Instead, Pyeongchang is a county in the Gangwon Province, located in the north east of South Korea.

The Winter Olympics will be hosted in two clusters, mountain and costal. Obviously the mountain cluster will host events that required mountains, like skiing and snowboarding. The costal region will host the indoor events on ice rinks, like figure skating, speed skating and hockey.

The Alpensia Resort in Daegwallyeong-myeon will host most of the mountain cluster events. There are two other stand alone venues that will host some skiing and snowboarding events. The Alpensia Resort will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and is also the location of the Olympic Village, which houses the athletes.

The coastal cluster will be hosted in the Gangneung Olympic Park, named after the host city. There are four venues in the Gangneung Olympic Park for various events. Kwandong University will host the women’s hockey tournament.

Here is a list of venues, organized by cluster, and which sports will compete there.

PyeongChang Mountain Cluster

Alpensia Resort:

  • Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium – Ceremonies
  • Alpensia Ski Jumping Center – Ski jumping, Nordic combined
  • Alpensia Biathlon Center – Biathlon
  • Alpensia Cross-Country Center – Cross-country skiing, Nordic combined
  • Alpensia Sliding Center – Luge, bobsleed, and skeleton
  • Yongpyong Alpine Center – Alpine skiing (slalom, giant slalom)

Stand-alone venues:

  • Bokwang Snow Park – Freestyle skiing and snowboard
  • Jeongseon Alpine Center – Alpine skiing (downhill, super-G, and combined)

Gangneung Coastal Cluster

Gangneung Olympic Park:

  • Gangneung Hockey Center – Ice hockey (men’s tournament)
  • Gangneung Curling Center – Curling
  • Gangneung Oval – Speed skating
  • Gangneung Ice Arena – Short-track speed skating and figure skating

Kwandong University:

  • Kwandong Hockey Center – Ice Hockey (women’s tournament)
