Hawaii QB Dru Brown headed to Oklahoma State
The departure of Mason Rudolph will create a hole under center for Oklahoma State, but Dru Brown will enter the mix as a grad transfer.
There’s no replacing the best quarterback in school history, but that’s what Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State will have to do with Mason Rudolph headed to the NFL. A lack of experience under center in Stillwater next season seems virtually certain, but Hawaii quarterback Dru Brown has announced on Twitter that he’s headed to Oklahoma State.
Brown was a two-year starter at Hawaii, for head coach Nick Rolovich. In 2017, he completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 2,785 yards with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions. During his career in Honolulu he completed 62 percent of his passes for 5,273 yards (7.1 yards per attempt) with 37 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a 133.6 passer rating.
As a graduate transfer, Brown will be immediately eligible for the 2018 season. Based on experience alone, he has an advantage in the competition to replace Rudolph.
Former walk-on Taylor Cornelius (24) and sophomore Keondre Wudtee (3) have a combined 27 career pass attempts, as could be expected with Rudolph holding down the fort under center for Oklahoma State as he did. Top recruit Spencer Sanders, the No. 1-ranked quarterback out of tjhe state of Texas in the 2018 class and the No. 6 dual threat quarterback in the country (via 247 Sports), will also enter the mix to replace Rudolph heading toward next season.

Gundy’s offensive system, coordinated by Mike Yurcich since 2013, has been very friendly to quarterbacks. Brown showed some ability as a dual threat for Hawaii in 2016, with 306 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and he had two rushing scores last season. That added running element is not something they’ve generally had at Oklahoma State, with pocket passers like Rudolph and Brandon Weeden, but Brown brings it to the table to open up play-calling possibilities for a couple of noted offensive minds.
