Winter Olympics: How many US athletes are going to South Korea?

The United States will be sending the largest delegation in Winter Olympics history.

The United States is sending 243 athletes to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games to compete in various sports in hopes of bringing home gold. Team USA is the largest in the history of the Olympic games.

“Once again, Team USA is among the largest teams to compete in the Olympic Winter Games, and we continue to see a spike in excellence from Americans competing in winter sports as the sport program expands to include more opportunities for our athletes,” said Alan Ashley, U.S. chef de mission and USOC chief of sport performance to TeamUSA.org. “We are primed and ready for another strong showing from our athletes, who have made a long-time commitment to represent us as the best in the U.S. at these Games, and we look forward to cheering for each member of Team USA on the world’s greatest stage.”

The games, which are being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, will begin Feb. 9 and go until Feb. 25, 2018.

Of the 243 athletes, 108 are women and 135 are men. There are 37 former Olympic medalists and 10 Olympic champions (gold medalists). These athletes will represent seven sports and 15 different disciplines. In addition to veteran medalists, Team USA will have 12 four-time Olympians, 28 three-time Olympians, and 60 two-time Olympians.

There will be an American athlete competing in 97 of the 102 medal contests.

Team USA is considered to be the most diverse American winter team on record, with 10 African-Americans, 11 Asian-Americans and the first two openly gay male athletes.
