Is Shaun White competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics?
By Nir Regev
The legendary Shaun White is arriving at the 2018 Winter Olympics in style, with an intimidating 100 perfect score in the U.S. Grand Prix.
The answer is an emphatic yes and there was no other option, Shaun White is going to compete at his fourth Winter Olympics. White will be contending for his third gold medal in men’s halfpipe [Gold: 2006 Turin, 2010 Vancouver].
The halfpipe snowboarding legend put any negative whispers to rest when he scored a score of a perfect 100 in his third run at the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix in Snowmass, Colorado. The event, which took place this past January 13, 2018, officially qualified the icon to the 2018 US Olympic team.
No doubt, the rest of the competition will be watching every second closely because White is always a run away from taking it all.
When White suffered a crash in New Zealand while training for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, suffering 62 stitches to the face and injuries and bruises to his lungs, did he say enough? Of course not, he got right back up, dusted himself off, and went back to preparing to win. The hard work paid off because White isn’t just going in as a challenger but the favorite to take the Gold medal home.
If White accomplishes the immense task he becomes the first snowboarder to have more than two Olympic Gold medals. He would also become the first U.S. male snowboarder to win the same individual event at three separate Olympic games.
White is arguably the biggest star on Team USA in the Olympics, and his presence would’ve been sorely missed. He’ll help fuel the snowboarding ratings on NBC, with the halfpipe final airing live in primetime.
The Perfect Halfpipe Run: 100
Believe it or not, it was actually Shaun White’s second time achieving a score of 100 in halfpipe. White previously scored a 100 in the 2012 Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado.
