Usually, fans are accusing officials of making calls in favor of the Patriots, not the other way around.

It’s very rare that the majority of casual football fans are on the side of New England Patriots fans. That was the case in the third quarter of Super Bowl 52 on Sunday, when Philadelphia Eagles running back Corey Clement caught a touchdown pass that probably shouldn’t have counted.

The play, at the time, helped give the Eagles an even bigger lead over the Patriots at a critical point in the game. This isn’t the first time New England has been involved in a controversial catch play, the only difference is this time they were the team getting screwed.

Here’s the catch, and it doesn’t take a slow-motion replay to see that it’s a questionable catch at best.

Slowing down the play shows that Clement didn’t get his second foot down in bounds with possession of the football. Just look at where his foot is with the ball clearly still moving in his arms.

It’s crocodile tears to complain about this catch if you’re not a Patriots fan, but the integrity of the game matters here. This is the Super Bowl, and these plays are under the microscope in a way others aren’t.

As big as the Jesse James catch reversal was, this is happening on the biggest stage of the NFL season. Getting the call right matters and it appears here that officials didn’t do that. Regardless of who the call is going for or against, mistakes like this can’t happen.
