Dirk Nowitzki had a banner night Monday (Feb. 5) when he eclipsed 50,000 career minutes, although his name on the back of his jersey was misspelled in the process.

Dirk Nowitzki joined another elite group this past Monday night (Feb. 5). Nowitzki logged his 50,000th minute as an NBA player. What makes Nowitzki’s accomplishment so great is that he logged every minute as a member of the Dallas Mavericks. Nowitzki, who is in year 20 with the Mavs, needed just seven minutes to accomplish the feat.

Nowitzki’s head coach Rick Carlisle spoke with ESPN last night about his Nowitzki’s accomplishment.

"“I just really believe Dirk’s record of high level of excellence, of longevity, durability, is one of the most remarkable I’ve ever seen in sport,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said after the game.Nowitzki now ranks fifth all time in minutes, having passed Hayes, who played exactly 50,000 minutes in his Hall of Fame career. Abdul-Jabbar holds the record for minutes, with 57,446."

Nowitzki did this legendary feat with something odd on the back of his jersey, though. What was odd? Just the spelling of his last name, of course. “Nowitzki,” was misspelled “Nowitkzi.”

But Nowitzki should fear not. He wasn’t the first nor the last to have his last name misspelled on the back of his jersey.

The Dallas Mavericks currently are 17-37 after last nights loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Presently, the Mavericks sit at the very bottom of the Western Conference. Whether or not Nowitzki is retiring or not, it would appear the Mavericks playoff chances are all but obsolete. Regardless of what happens in the spring, Nowitzki can hang his NBA hat proudly. He is now fifth in the NBA in minutes played, and sixth in the NBA in points scored. Nowitzki will no doubt be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
