Greg Schiano was reportedly on the move to New England but will instead stay at Ohio State.
It’s tough to keep track of who’s staying in New England and who’s leaving. With Matt Patricia leaving the Patriots to take the Detroit Lions job, there was an opening on Bill Belichick’s staff for a defensive coordinator. It was believed that job was going to be filled by Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. Instead, Schiano is remaining in Columbus, according to Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman.
This isn’t the first time Schiano was reported to have a new job in place that ultimately didn’t come to fruition in the last few months. One of the craziest stories I’ve seen in college football happened after the season when Schiano was all set to be named the new head coach at Tennessee. That didn’t sit well with Vol Nation after they learned he was linked to Penn State and the Jerry Sandusky scandal so they protested the prospective hire and blocked that hire and Tennessee went on to have one of the more bizarre coaching searches in recent memory before landing Jeremy Pruitt.
With Schiano staying in Ohio State, he’ll work alongside Alex Grinch who came over from Washington State earlier this offseason. It remains to be seen exactly how Grinch and Schiano will work together. Will it be Grinch’s defense with Schiano assisting him or vice versa? I’ll leave that up to Urban Meyer, who has had multiple voices coaching his defenses in the past so it should all work out fine.

Keeping Schiano on the staff was another bit of good news today for Ohio State. The Buckeyes have one of the top recruiting classes in the country. They rank No. 2 according to ESPN and 247Sports, behind Georgia, so this is a pretty good day for Meyer and all fans of the Buckeyes as they look to get back to the College Football Playoff this coming season.
