How well did Scott Frost do on the recruiting trail in his short time as the Nebraska head coach? We grade the Cornhuskers 2018 recruiting class.

The biggest recruit Nebraska signed this class was undoubtedly head coach Scott Frost. Technically, this has nothing to do with Nebraska’s 2018 recruiting class, except that it has everything to do with this year’s class and future classes. The former UCF head coach is coming off a perfect season and a win over Auburn in the Peach Bowl as the school is claiming they are national champions.

Frost continued to work for UCF while pulling double duty as he began to put his touch on the Huskers recruiting class. It can be tough to keep a class together when there is a coaching change and it can be tough for the incoming coach to really make an impression in such a short window from the end of the season until National Signing Day.

Having said that, Frost’s first recruiting class at Nebraska is pretty solid and should encourage Husker fans for the type of recruit and the type of classes he’ll be bringing to Lincoln in the future.

Nebraska has the No. 25 class overall and the No. 4 class in the Big Ten with 19 total commits, including four, four-star recruits on board. The top recruit is four-star quarterback Adrian Martinez from Fresno, Ca. He was Frost’s first phone call and first offer after taking the job after the AAC Championship Game. He showed him how much he was a priority and Martinez bought in. Look for Martinez to play early and based on what Frost did for McKenzie Milton at UCF, the sky is the limit for Martinez in Lincoln.

Determining a letter grade for Nebraska’s recruiting class is a two-fold thought process. The first part is how to grade on a curve considering Frost had less than two months to slap together a class that was left from former coach Mike Riley. Had Frost been the coach at Nebraska for the last year, I think the Huskers would have a top-15 class and a few more impact players on both sides of the ball.

Next: National Signing Day: Predictions for top 25 uncommitted recruits

The second factor is this largely hinges on the play of Martinez. He’s the quarterback of the future. If Martinez steps in as a freshman and looks like the second coming of Tommie Frazier, then this class gets an A+. If he can’t get on the field early and struggles when he does get his chance, the strength of the class is lessened considerably.

Having said that, you have to like what Frost has done in such a short time and the future is bright in Lincoln.
