NFL free agency 2018: Best quarterbacks available
By John Buhler
Simply put, Case Keenum is coming off a career year, as he was the shining beacon of hope for a lost Minnesota Vikings quarterback room. Keenum more than steeped up when Sam Bradford got hurt, as Keenum went 11-3 in his 14 games as the Vikings starter. Though he didn’t make the Pro Bowl, Keenum is about to get paid in his impending free agency.
Keenum completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 3,547 yards, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions quarterbacking the 2017 Vikings. He also delivered the greatest touchdown pass in Vikings history: The Minneapolis Miracle to wide receiver Stefon Diggs to beat the New Orleans Saints on the final play from regulation in the NFC Divisional Round.
Could Keenum return to the Vikings? Absolutely, but he will cost them way more than the $2 million he made in salary in 2017. He could be a candidate for the Vikings to use the franchise tag on, but is he worth that much salary? What Keenum did show is that he can be an effective starting quarterback in the NFL, further illustrating that Jeff Fisher had no idea what he was doing offensively.
One thing to keep in mind is that Keenum wouldn’t have offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur should he return to the Vikings. Shurmur now coaches the New York Giants. Keenum has a tough choice to make. Does he take most money, best fit or hopefully a great combination of those two. Either way, he earned the right to be somebody’s starting quarterback in 2018.
