5. Win it for Jim

The Olympic preparation for Team USA was interrupted by sudden and heartbreaking news just a couple of weeks ago. General manager Jim Johannson died, aged just 53, on Jan. 21.

Johannson was a part of Team USA hockey for nearly 20 years. He had the honor of selecting countless players to represent their nation, and was highly regarded by players, coaches and executives alike.

His passing was punctuated by tweets, tributes and testimonials from high-profile admirers. Such was his influence that Team USA decided not to name a replacement before the Olympics.

This was Jim Johannson’s team. He hand-picked the players and the coaching staff. Most of them knew him well from previous training camps and World Championship tournaments. It is only natural that there will be an air of sadness over the camp as a result.

But the players and coaches will also be determined to clinch success in Johannson’s name. They will have to keep their emotions in check, but will all be highly motivated. Everyone wants to contribute to Johansson’s legacy, and prove he made the right decision by selecting them.
