The 2018 Winter Olympics are underway and we have the results of the men’s short program team event on the first night of competition.

The men’s short program team event kicked off the day before the 2018 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony and it was immediately clear that nerves were getting the best of all of the athletes.

The required elements for the 2:40 men’s short program include three jumps, three spins, footwork elements, and one of the jump sequences must be a combination jump (think triple flip, triple toe). The judges base their decisions on the technical elements as well as the overall program using a predetermined scoring system, but since it’s largely subjective there can always be controversy with the scoring system.

Nathan Chen made his debut as the Team USA representative in the men’s short program team event. Though he managed to land the first quad flip in Olympics competition in a quad flip-double toe combination, he fell almost immediately afterward in a less than stellar performance that earned him a score of 80.61. His score was enough to put him in third place until Japan’s Shoma Uno jumped into first place, knocking Chen from the top three.

Here are the results from the Team Event – Men’s Short Program:

  1. Japan – Shoma Uno – 103.25
  2. Israel – Aleksei Bychenko – 88.49
  3. Canada – Patrick Chan – 81.66
  4. United States – Nathan Chen – 80.61
  5. Italy – Matteo Rizzo – 77.77
  6. Korea – Cha Jun-Hwan – 77.70
  7. China – Yan Han – 77.10
  8. Olympics Athletes of Russia – Mikhail Kolyada – 74.36
  9. Germany – Paul Fentz – 66.32
  10. France – Chafik Besseghier – 61.06

As you can see from the results, none of the anticipated medal contenders had solid performances, with Shoma Uno as the only skater who had a completely solid performance.

With Chen’s results, the United Stated earns seven points in the team event.
