Will Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby be at the 2018 Winter Olympics?

The 2018 Winter Olympics is typically that time Canada’s residents can brag about how much better they are than everyone else. Especially when it comes to hockey. Canada has produced many of today’s NHL stars, including Sidney Crosby.

However, because of a disagreement between the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) and the NHL, Crosby, along with all NHL players, will not be participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics. It’s truly sad they won’t be able to. Canada could have trotted out what might have been the best roster they’ve had since at least the legendary Canada Cup roster of 1987.

Fans probably will never get to see Crosby, John Tavares, and Connor McDavid play together on the same team in their prime. The 2018 Winter Olympics was their best chance to do so. Of course, whenever the next World Cup of HOckey is, that might provide the unique opportunity. But given Crosby’s struggles with concussions and the cruelness of hockey, it’s far from a guarantee.

Sid The Kid will also miss out on potentially winning his third gold medal. He would join a very exclusive job by doing so. However, perhaps Penguins fans should be happy Crosby can’t go. For one thing, he’ll be fully focused on getting Pittsburgh back to the postseason. They’ve got a tough second half ahead of them, so every little bit helps.

Secondly, Crosby can’t be injured during the Olympics if he doesn’t go. True, he could just as easily suffer an injury playing in an NHL game. But at least now, if Crosby does, the team will be all over it.

Many people have been waiting to see what team Canada could put together for the 2018 Winter Olympics. It’s a darn shame Crosby and the best players in the world won’t be there.
