11 songs the FanSided figure skating team would perform to at the Olympics
If FanSided happened to figure skate in the Olympics, this is the music our editors and contributors would figure skate to.
Who among us hasn’t had a dream of performing a majestic figure skating program during the Olympics? They’re magical, majestic, and graceful. We at FanSided are not immune to the irresistible beauty of a triple axel, and when we learned that the Olympics now allowed skaters to perform to music with lyrics, well, we revamped all our programs.
Let’s take a look at what some of our contributors, sorry, our figure skating team, would use to captivate hearts around the world.
Aaron Hertzog: Prince, “Batdance”
“It came to me in a moment of perfect inspiration.”
Thomas Wheaton: Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
“I think without a doubt it has to be ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ Outfit would have to mirror Freddie Mercury as well.”
Joe Romano: Foo Fighters, “Best Of You”
Christine Wang: Pokemon Theme Song
“Mine would be the Pokemon theme song because it would help me convey the message through music as well as through my ice skating prowess that I want to be the very best like no one ever was. It also helps that I never get more expressive in singalongs than when that song comes on. I think it’s an obvious choice.”
Brad Berreman: Phil Collins, “Against All Odds”
Cody Williams: Three Blind Mice
“Played on recorders by a second grade class because why are we even ice skating if we aren’t supporting the children and future of tomorrow.”
Tre LyDay: Lana Del Rey, “Coachella (Woodstock In My Mind)”
“Coachella by Lana Del Ray is without a doubt my song.”
David Stevenson: The Rising Sun (Shinsuke Nakamura’s WWE Theme)
Because I’m limited to lyric-less songs, “Defying Gravity” and “My Heart Will Go On” aren’t options. But that’s fine because Shinsuke Nakamura’s WWE theme has no words. And it’s amazing. When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a song with features a ton of violin and sounds look it should be the music for the final boss to a video game. Of course, my routine would end with a bow.
Michelle Bruton: Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Free Bird”
"There’s only one correct answer to this question, and it’s “Free Bird.” “Free Bird” has everything you could want in an Olympics singles ice skating performance. Since skaters aren’t allowed to choose music with words, even the instrumental version of “Free Bird” has enough going on to make for a compelling free skate. From the swelling opening notes to the shredding solo, there are opportunities for everything: jumps, spins, and steps leading up to my grand finale, a quadruple axel. Obviously, this would be for the long form program. I would have to cut five minutes off the song to come in at the four-minute limit for ladies’ free skating, but the ending solo is literally six minutes, so that’s easy."
Matt Verderame: Toto, “Africa”
“‘Africa by Toto’ would be my choice, and I would wear a [fire emoji] outfit. Would throw in a few triple axles with a sow cow at the end.”

Cheryl Wassenaar: Yuri!!! On Ice, “In Regards To Love: Eros”
“I’m a shameless anime enthusiast. Gotta go all black with the costume too for maximum shouting out, but I’d swap in some red accents here and there for my costume.”
