Facebook reportedly testing a downvote option for comments
Since Facebook’s conception and ‘liking’ became a phenomenon, there was one thing people wanted: a dislike button.
People on Facebook have been wanting one thing for as long as I can remember. The social media outlet has always offered the ability to ‘like’ something, a status, a picture, a post — but there was never an ability to dislike something.
For some people, this caused problems in communication. “Are you happy my boyfriend broke up with me or are you supporting my sadness?” If you’re like me, and, well, anyone online who overanalyzes, you can see how this would bring some issues.
However, despite years of pleading for a dislike button, people are still waiting. Recently, however, The Daily Beast announced Facebook was looking at a “downvote” button for some users in the U.S.
Here’s what the downvotes look like on Facebook:
This is the second step towards a dislike button after “reactions” were introduced in 2016. To give people more options on how to react to a post, ‘Haha’, ‘Mad’, ‘Sad’, ‘Love’, and ‘Wow’ were all given. During June, which was Pride month, you could comment a post by giving it a rainbow flag. Not sure what the comment was, but reactions have given Facebook users a source of entertainment.
Even though it was cited by Bloomberg in 2016 that having a ‘dislike’ button could give too much negativity in the Facebook world, isn’t it better than looking like a Reddit wannabe? Right now, Facebook is still more mainstream than Reddit, but if they take the idea of ‘downvoting’ a comment, all they’ll be doing is giving free advertisement for the other site.

It’s possible this is all premature. This is only being looked at with a small number of Facebook users, and it’s unknown when or if it’ll even be rolled out. Also, while social media CEOs are listening, can we please get an edit Twitter button?
What do you think? Should reactions stay, downvote be added, or just a pure dislike button? Sound off in the comments of what you think Facebook should do.
