Who has more fantasy value after trade: James Ennis or Brice Johnson?

Detroit continued to add pieces as they sense vulnerability in the Cavs by trading for James Ennis. Of course, Cleveland sent shockwaves throughout the NBA world later in the day making Detroit’s deals pale in comparison. Here is the deal for Ennis:

Ennis established himself as part of the Memphis rotation, starting 42 of 109 games while playing an average of 23 minutes of the last two seasons. This year, Ennis has averaged 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists this season for Memphis. Ennis was brought in to take over the role of Jon Leuer, who is out for the season with an ankle injury.

Ennis will likely be behind Stanley Johnson at the forward slot unless he significantly outplays him in his time off the bench. This could take some of the fantasy value away from Johnson, but not enough to think about dropping him. Anthony Tolliver‘s role is secure since he has been playing the four with Griffin sliding to center to rest Drummond.

If you were using Ennis in Memphis, he will likely have the same value in Detroit. He is worth keeping an eye on in deeper leagues, especially if Ennis is still playing more than 20 minutes per game.

More from Fantasy Basketball

Brice Johnson, the 25th pick in the 2016 draft, has appeared in just 12 games playing a total of 48 minutes over two seasons with the Clippers. Johnson picked up 20 points, 16 rebounds, eight steals, three blocks, and two assists in those 48 minutes, so there is potential here.

It may stay untapped though. Memphis is loaded in the frontcourt with JaMychal Green, Jarell Martin, Brandan Wright, Ivan Rabb, Deyonta Davis, and Marc Gasol already on the roster. Memphis didn’t move any other pieces, so it seems unlikely that Johnson will get any more playing time unless he dazzles in practice.

Johnson still isn’t worth keeping around due to the bodies in front of him, most of which have more potential. There is no guarantee that Memphis will even hang on to Johnson due to the depth up front.
