The Agents of SHIELD successfully escaped back to their own time, but plenty of questions persist. Will we get the answers to them with a new episode?
Agents of SHIELD fans may have had to wait longer than usual for the start of season 5, but it’s been well worth the wait. With 10 episodes in the bag, this season has effectively reached the halfway mark with last week’s edition serving as a midseason finale. In that sense, it served its purpose — it wrapped up all the storylines that came before it and set up what’s to come.
All of this is to say, if you’re expecting a new episode of Agents of SHIELD this week, don’t get your hopes up. It’s off this week, and the next two after that before returning on March 2 with the aptly titled “All the Comforts of Home.”
The reason for this extended break is simple: it’s the Winter Olympics, and the entire world will be focused on Pyeongchang until Feb. 25. This Friday is also the Opening Ceremony of the Games, so there’s no chance ABC would sign off on Agents of SHIELD — which has been struggling with ratings — to go up against that, even if it’s a replay.
Even if this weren’t an Olympic year, it’s safe to say there would’ve been a break after last episode. That’s because Agents of SHIELD is trying to split this season into two parts. We watched as the Agents repeatedly tried to fend off the Kree while learning about themselves in the process.
This back half will now be devoted to ensuring this Lighthouse timeline never happens and that Quake never becomes the Destroyer of Worlds. That’ll be easier said than done, as Agent Coulson is infected with odium and could turn on his team at any time. As such, SHIELD could be forced to face the tough call of letting Coulson die.

There are myriad of directions this season could take, but trying to predict it would be an exercise in futility.
