Will Jameer Nelson play enough in Detroit to be a fantasy asset?

Jameer Nelson is on the move for the second time this week. Nelson was dealt to Chicago in the Mirotic deal. He was moved again to Detroit in the first deal of deadline day. Here is the full deal:

The Pistons were in desperate need of a point guard, but couldn’t afford Tyreke Evans or other high-profile options. The Bulls continue to shed salary and try to stockpile picks. This trade is one that could come up empty for them though. The Bulls would need to be better than the Pistons within four years for this trade to mean anything for Chicago. I have no issues with a team gambling on themselves, but this seems unlikely if Griffin likes Detroit.

Nelson, in his 16th NBA season, has averaged 5.1 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.2 rebounds per game in 20.1 minutes per game for the Pelicans this year. Despite the concussion to Kris Dunn, Nelson never appeared for the Bulls as they never intended on using him.

With Reggie Jackson possibly returning shortly after the All Star Break, this is just an insurance policy for the Pistons. Nelson could have some value in the short term as the first backup to Ish Smith. It’s doubtful that Nelson could displace Smith, but even so, Nelson can have value in deep leagues for the next couple of weeks if you are in need of cheap assists.

Sources are saying that the Bulls will waive Willie Reed. Reed appeared in 39 games (five starts) for the Clippers and just nine minutes in three games with Detroit. The Bulls already have Markkanen, Portis, Robin Lopez, Omer Asik, and Cristiano Felicio in the frontcourt, so releasing Reed gives him a chance to catch on somewhere else. He wouldn’t have played in Chicago anyway.

There are a couple of places where Reed could wind up that would give him value in deep leagues, but right now there is no reason to own him.
