Olympic curling: Mixed doubles round robin final results and highlights
The last round of the Olympic curling mixed doubles round robin tournament took place on Saturday evening, determining the teams for the semifinals.
Saturday night was the final session in the round robin portion of the first Olympic mixed doubles curling tournament. In round 7, Norway played China, Finland faced the United States, Switzerland took on (the Olympic Athlete from) Russia, and Canada competed against Korea.
Let’s take a look at the results from the last round of round robin mixed doubles tournament matchups.
Finland def. USA, 7-5
Neither Finland nor USA stood much of a shot at making the semi-finals going into this match. The Hamiltons had been struggling since a successful first round, with only one other win against Norway. The Finns, meanwhile, had not won a single game.
Well, after a close six ends, Finland notched up four points at once and, despite a valiant effort, USA could not counter strongly enough in the final end.
China def. Norway, 9-3
The China-Norway session 7 game ended in an early concession, with China up 9 after scoring five points in the sixth end.
Both China and Norway had performed admirably through the tournament, ending with 4 wins each and destined to face off again only a few hours later in the tie-breaker round.
Switzerland def. Russia, 9-8
Switzerland and Russia played it close throughout their final game of the round robin tournament. Switzerland eeked out the win, but Russia can live with the results: both teams will move on to the semi-finals without the need to participate in a tie-breaker round.
Canada def. Korea, 7-3
It should come as no surprise that curling powerhouse Canada won once again, 7-3. Korea conceded at the end of the seventh end.
Canada won all but one of its round robin games, having lost to Norway in the tournament opener. Naturally, Canada moves on.
Korea finished with a total of two wins, meaning the host mixed doubles team won’t move on.
Standings
- Canada (6)
- Switzerland (5)
- Olympic Athletes of Russia (4)
- China (4)
- Norway (4)
- Korea (2)
- USA (2)
- Finland (1)
This means Canada, Switzerland and Russia will play in the semi-final and China and Norway will play in a tie-breaker match to determine the fourth semi-finalist. (Russia qualified automatically despite being tied with China and Norway due to having the most wins against tied teams.)
