Lim Hyojun won Korea their first gold medal of the 2018 Winter Olympics in his home country and set an Olympic record in the process.

South Korea is hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics, and the games on home soil usually means an uptick in medal winners. It didn’t take long for South Korea to win their first medal, with Lim Hyojun nabbing gold in the Short Track Speed Skating Men’s 1,500m.

Not only did he win gold, he set a new Olympic record in the process with a time of 2:10.485. The previous record was set in 2010 at the Vancouver Games by fellow countryman Lee Jung-Su, a time of 2:10.949.

He is also scheduled to compete in the Men’s 5,000m Relay and will have a shot at a second medal.

Netherlands’ Sjinkie Knegt finished won the silver with a time of 2:10.555. Knegt holds the world record from a November 2016 competition in Salt Lake City, that record’s time was nearly three seconds faster than the time that won Lim Hyojun the gold in Pyeongchang.

Semen Elistratov of Russia won the bronze medal, making him the first of the “Olympic Athletes from Russia” to win a medal. He will likely be the answer of a trivia question in the future.

American Aaron Tran raced in Final B and finished with a time of 2:27.127.
