Switzerland made a huge statement in their 2018 Olympics women’s hockey debut, blowing out Korea 8-0.

Early on Saturday, Feb. 10, Switzerland faced Korea in the 2018 Olympics women’s hockey debut for both teams. The crowd got behind everything the host Korea, which featured players from both South and North Korea, did. However, it was not enough as Switzerland topped the unified team 8-0.

For Switzerland, 19-year-old phenom Alina Müller stood out. She scored the first two goals of the game. The first of the two was a shorthanded goal. Müller will be coming over to North America next season, as she’ll be playing for Northeastern University in Boston. So American hockey fans should get used to hearing her name. Müller ties Pernilla Winberg and Stefanie Marty for the most goals in an Olympic women’s hockey game.

Give credit to Sara Benz, who picked up the assist on each of Alina’s goals in the first period. Müller added an early second-period goal for her fourth goal. Also in the second period, Phoebe Staenz scored two goals of her own. Alternate captain Lara Stalder added two third-period goals of her own.

Despite what the score suggests, this wasn’t a very clean game for Switzerland. They committed multiple penalties and put Korea on the power play far too often. Luckily, Switzerland was able to kill those penalties. But still, their discipline has to improve moving forward. Florence Schelling didn’t see much action, but she did stop each of the five shots she saw.

For Korea, goaltender So Jun Shin had a rough night in goal. She faced over 40 shots on goal, most of them of the dangerous variety. As expected, Korea struggled. Even though they had the crowd on their side, the unified team simply faced too many obstacles and Switzerland was simply too good.
