Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjoergen was hoping to become the most decorated female Olympian on Saturday in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Norwegian Marit Bjoergen was looking to make history by becoming the most accomplished female Winter Olympian ever in the first medal event for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea and she did it — by placing second in the Women’s 7.5 km + 7.5 km Skiathlon on Saturday.

She was previously tied with Russian cross-country skier Raisa Smetanina and Italian cross-country skier Stefania Belmondo for the most medals for any female Olympian at 10 medals.

Even though all eyes were on Bjoergen, it was Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla who captured the first gold of the Winter Olympics. Kalla had a full 7.7-second lead over the favorite and skied happily into gold for her country.
